Last Friday 700 dedicated supporters volunteered for United Way Reading Day presented by EY, positively impacting 7,000 North Texas students, promoting literacy and sparking a love for reading.
Lauren Bottonari, a member of Women of Tocqueville, shared her experience at Uplift White Rock Hills saying, “What a great way to start your day and give back to the children that are our future by reading to them about the importance of being unique and different. I loved every second of it!”
Sam Edwards, who read at L.L. Hotchkiss, said he was honored and excited to participate in this event because "Reading is a gateway to great minds who offer their insights into wisdom, knowledge, and perception." He looks forward to participating again next year and demonstrating the power of literacy!
Together, we demonstrate the importance of reading as a gateway to education and the difference we can make in empowering students to reach their full potential. Thank you for supporting Reading Day!

A Recap of United Way Day at the Capitol
It’s Wednesday, and the sun is barely shining over the DoubleTree Suites in downtown Austin. Karen Tavana is wide awake and brushing up on United Way of Metropolitan Dallas’ four priorities for the 88th legislative session.
She’s one of 24 advocates who walked the halls of the Texas statehouse as part of United Way Day at the Capitol. She championed 211, the information and referral hotline that provides callers with referrals to local health and social service agencies, along with several other key policy issues for North Texans. The day was long but worth it. “If you want to make big change that impacts a broad number of people,” she says, “advocacy is a key component of reaching your desired goals.”
